With extensive recreational programming, highly trained staff and modern home-like facilities, we deliver everything an individual needs to live a bright and rewarding life. With five locations across the GTA, Safehaven serves almost 200 families every year. Residential and respite care programs provide round-the-clock care, 365 days a year, for a wide-range of individuals including those living with cerebral palsy, genetic and seizure disorders, vision loss, and hearing impairment.

Safehaven is constantly striving to better serve the families that need their help most. That’s why they are currently exploring opportunities to expand service offerings to adult aged individuals, developing programs and services to care for more medically complex individuals, and implementing innovative therapy and recreational programs for our existing and future clients. Safehaven is always working with community partners to ensure past, present and future clients have all the supports they need to live happy and fulfilling lives.

Director, Adult Programs, Quality and Safety

The Safehaven Director, Adult Programs, Quality & Safety directly reports to the Chief Executive Officer, and provides pivotal leadership to the Adult Programs, Quality & Safety/Operations Team. The position is responsible for day-to-day operating activities including participation in the development and execution of Safehaven’s operations, and maintenance and enhancement of Quality and Safety practices.

This role will contribute to the development of the strategic plan and implement necessary changes and improvements to the current structure, to ensure provision of a high Quality of Care and Safety to the clients in Safehaven’s care. This role will also be accountable for strategic leadership at the executive and individual level.

This Director, Adult Programs, Quality & Safety role will work closely with the leadership team to provide critically important oversight of operational and strategic leadership, including Human Resources, Finance, Quality, Safety & Risk Management, Client Care, and Facilities Management.

The role will also support Safehaven to maintain the highest Quality of Care and Safety for our clients and families, through a thorough background in medical and nursing skills and background to make sure that the care provided is of the highest quality.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

 Strategic

  • Advises the CEO on strategic program development, planning and compliance issues, and making recommendations on major program decisions;
  • Helps to determine resource allocation among programs, locations, and residences to ensure optimal Quality of Care and Safety;
  • Organizes and monitors the effective utilization of program consultants associated with the organization;
  • Participates in in-call and takes for the operation of Safehaven including reporting to the Board of Directors in the absence of the CEO.

Program Growth & Development

  • Builds and maintains an organizational culture where performance matters;
  • Develops operational goals for each program that are realistic and tied to long-term goals;
  • Helps to determine resource allocation among programs, locations, and residences to ensure optimal Quality of Care and Safety;
  • Develops programs for clients to enhance Quality of Care and Safety, and develop more involved activities for the clients and families;
  • Collaborates with Social work team regarding needs and requirements of social work programs and requirements;
  • Ensures proper report structure within each program area;
  • Challenges basic assumptions underlying each program’s operations;
  • Works with Human Resources to develop, establish and direct execution of operating policies to support Safehaven’s policies and objectives.

Supervision/Management

  • Develops and approves Key Performance Indicators and metrics for Client Care Coordinators and front line staff (RSWs and RPNs);
  • Conducts regular meetings with supervisors to negotiate operational objectives, performance goals, and promote a culture of resident safety and wellbeing;
  • Acts as a sounding board for Client Care Coordinators regarding operations, training, staffing, and any other necessary requirements for the various Safehaven locations.

Compliance

  • Ensures adherence to annual budgets;
  • Manages/oversees the organization-wide Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs focusing on developing, establishing, and creating effective measures and procedures for the health and safety of clients, families and employees;
  • Along with the Safehaven Social Worker, takes part in, and assists with the internal and external complaints procedure;
  • Assumes accountability for communication, closure, and follow up on all high priority cases;
  • Develops and coordinates all activities and supports required to ensure compliance with the Ministry of Community & Social Services Quality Assurance Measures (QAM);
  • Lead for Accreditation process with Accreditation Canada.

Communication and Accountabilities

  • Open and effective communication to CEO, as well as other staff and outside agencies;
  • Maintains ongoing communication with family of clients who are supported through Safehaven, to ensure the understanding of organizational policies and procedures;
  • Keeps the CEO informed regarding delivery of key program activities, potential threats, opportunities and operating policies to support Safehaven’s policies and objectives;
  • Presents and/or participates in committees that support the work of the Board of Directors;
  • Reports any hazards discovered to the CEO.

Professional Practice

  • Responsible for the promotion and maintenance of Quality and Safety practices in providing residential and respite care to clients with complex disabilities;
  • Maintenance of the highest standards of Quality of Care and Safety for clients and families making use of Safehaven’s facilities and staff;
  • Recommends changes in behavioral and organizational practices that are critical to the development of a professional practice milieu;
  • Assesses need and evaluates current and future professional nursing and development practices at Safehaven;
  • Mentors staff to provide professional development and skills training to better maintain and increase the skillsets of Safehaven staff;
  • Ensures provision of family-centered care to clients in a home like setting;
  • Oversees client health care records including information regarding resident and their families, nursing observations, telephone communications, interventions, teaching and care evaluations;
  • Monitors, reviews and makes recommendation on agency's health care policies;
  • Consults and collaborates with community partners in ongoing program growth and development.

  • Follows Health and Safety policies that are set out at Safehaven;

  • Performs additional tasks as assigned and required by the CEO.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • A Master’s degree in Nursing or a related field;
  • Experience in Acute, Rehab, or Community-based setting;
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive management / leadership in a healthcare setting;
  • Experience in teaching or academic organization considered an asset;
  • A visible leader with an approachable, personable and optimistic demeanor and the ability to engage, empower and motivate others;
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills, proficiency in presentation, and a record of professional presentations and publications;
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop and use metrics for program evaluation;
  • An energetic, organized leader with the ability to stay on task with multiple priorities;
  • Understanding of the interface between care practices, and information technologies; the ability to promote the effective use of information systems and to gain relevant information about care practices to improve organizational effectiveness;
  • The ability to develop an effective team with a shared vision and success in achieving goals, objectives, and collaborative practice;
  • Competency and demonstrated skill with a computer;
  • Experience with clients who have multiple complex disabilities;
  • Advanced communication and computer skills.
